If you have long since passed the age limit where prank phone calls are deemed appropriate, never fear, you can still enjoy the radio act of Roy D. Mercer. Tulsa, Oklahoma radio announcers Brent Douglas and Phil Stone created the character of Mercer as an act completely based on prank calls. Mercer, formed as a sort of hillbilly version of the Jerky Boys, gained fame as a comedy act before being snatched up by Capitol Records in 1997. Capitol released two coinciding albums, How Big ‘a Boy Are Ya?, Vol. 1 and Vo. 2 that year, followed by other successful albums before embarking on a new format with 2001's Roy D. Mercer Vs. Yankees. The album peaked at number 24 on Billboard's Top Country Albums chart.
Original fans of Roy D. Mercer rejoiced when the radio act resumed its original How Big ‘a Boy Are Ya? format with a string of successful albums in the new millennium. Mercer released 2002's Family Album, 2003's Hit the Road, followed by Get Well Soon in 2004 and Black and Blue in 2006. Mercer continues to charm fans with Southern-tinged one-liners that have had fans howling for years. Despite his unconventional approach, Roy D. Mercer's fun-filled pranks continue to appear on the country music charts. Mercer's most recent release, 2008's More Greatest Hits, graced Billboard's Top Country albums charts and shows that this radio personality has outlasted even some of the most talented country acts. Roy D. Mercer indulges the inner child in each one of us by enabling us to relive our prank call fantasies through this outrageous Southern character.
