Sandro, known as Sandro de América, has been one of the most popular Argentinean pop stars for over 40 years thanks to his famous pop ballads and acting roles.
Roberto Sanchez Sandro was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1945 and was influenced by the rock'n'roll music of the genre's King, Elvis Presley, early on. In the 1970's Sandro (as he is best known) made his rock debut with Sandro y Los De Fuego but has since been able to expand beyond his teen-idol rep to remain an enduring star in Argentina. As part of the Mexican group Teen Pops, Sandro is considered to be one of the pioneering rock'n'roll artists in Spanish, but his foray into music began with the formation of his first band, Trio Azul. The trio changed to Los Caribes when Agustin Monaco left the act and later Sandro joined Los Caniches de Oklahoma (which soon changed names to Los del Fuego).
As a solo artist, Sandro's first release was 1963's "¿A Esto Llamas Amor?," which was followed by Los del Fuego's single "Hay Mucha Agitacion." Four years later Sandro performed at a Buenos Aires' festival and took home the first prize for his song "Quiero Llenarme de Ti." This breakthrough performance was followed by a string of high-profile shows, including a 1970 performance at New York's Madison Square Garden. The following year, Sandro performed for 60 thousand fans at San Lorenzo's stadium. Sandro's success has spread throughout all of South America, where he is known as "Sandro de América."
In addition to his widespread pop music fame, Sandro has also appeared in over 16 films as well as the popular Puerto Rican soap opera Fue Sin Querer. Despite suffering from a lung condition, Sandro continues to perform and remains one of the most popular entertainers in Argentina, with over forty albums, which range from 1965's Sandro y Los de Fuego and 1968's Quiero llenarme de ti (Vibracion y Ritmo) to 1996's Historia viva and 2004's Amor Gitano, under his belt.
