Savage Garden pervaded the pop scene in the late ‘90s with the syrupy sweet love songs "Truly Madly Deeply" and "I Knew I Loved You" and although the Australian duo parted ways in 2001, Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones have since gone on to see solo success.
Jones and Hayes originally called themselves Crush before Australian music great John Woodruff (previous manager of the Angels and Baby Animals) heard one of their demo tapes and placed them in the studio with fellow Aussie producer Charles Fisher (of Air Supply and Moving Pictures fame). In July 1996 Savage Garden released their first single, "I Want You" and although it reached the Number Two spot, it was soon eclipsed by subsequent singles "To the Moon and Back" and "Truly Madly Deeply," which both snagged the Number One spot. In April of the following year, Savage Garden issued an eponymous debut album which entered the charts at Number One and remained there for an astounding 13 weeks.
While success was already solidified in their native Australia, Savage Garden soon received ample airplay in the States; a Dallas radio station started playing "I Want You" and the duo soon earned a record contract with Sony's Columbia imprint in the U.S. "Truly Madly Deeply" became a global hit alongside "I Want You" and eventually achieved Number One in the U.S. in 1998. Savage Garden received ten Australian ARIA Awards and sold 11 million copied around the world.
In 2000 Savage Garden released the single "I Knew I Loved You," which was followed by their sophomore album, Affirmation. Although the album was pieced together from separate corners (as Hayes had since moved to New York), "I Knew I Loved You" became the duo's second Number One single in the U.S.
