At just four years old the Indian singer Shreya Ghoshal began her singing career. The Bengali from Rajasthan Kota was born to a nuclear power plant employee and a literary scholar. Once her parents discovered their daughter's talents she immediately began training, at first with her mother and then formally with Hindustani classical music in Kota.

She was first discovered when she performed during the children's Sa Re Ga Ma contest on Zee TV where Kalyanjibhai was the judge. Later, after Ghoshal won the 75th show and eventually the children's mega finals in 1996, she began studying under Kalyanjibhai. During the competition another influential person saw her perform and eventually introduced Ghoshal to the world of acting. Film director Sanjay Leela Bhansali offered her a role in the Bollywood film Devdas and after she starred and recorded for the film she was a household name. She was just 12 years old at the time.

After leaving the sciences to pursue a career in the arts, the singer began recording for Anu Malik for JP Dutta's LoC and Vidhu vinod Chopra's next film with Shahrukh khan and Aishwarya Rai where she sings for Aishwarya. She has become the most well known Bollywood playback artists, most particularly for the single "Jaadu Hai Nasha Hai" for the 2003 film Jism. The single even earned a spot on national airplay charts and serious success for the movie. That year she also received the National Award among others. Besides her native Hindi she sings and speaks Tamil, Malayalam and Telugu.

Ghoshal is continuing her education, studying literature, and has come to appreciate western music as well.
