Psychedelic group Simian gained famed due to their 2003 single "La Breeze," which was featured in a Peugeot 1007 ad and in the Dove film advertisement for Onslaught.
Simian formed in the late ‘90s when the trio of James Ford, Alex MacNaughton and James Shaw added Simon Lord to the mix and decided to name themselves. The indie rockers were well known for their extreme experimentation that was relevant of both the current times, like the groups Luke Vibert and the Beta Band, to ‘60s pop groups like Silver Apples and the United States of America. In 2000 they debuted several EPs, including Watch it Glow and The Wisp, before their first full length album appeared in 2001.
Their UK Source debut was the LP Chemistry is What We Are. The 11 track disc compiles a long list of their influences in each singles melodies and beats, especially groups like Elephant 6 and the Beatles. Though most of the singles weren't anything extremely profound, Simian did prove that they were confident enough to create tracks that were familiar but still eccentrically insightful. The US bonus track "Grey," released with Astralwerks, demonstrated just what kind of force these boys had in them.
In 2002 the group released their follow up album, We Are Your Friends and promoted their now US based sound with a North American tour. The video for We are Your Friends title track won the award for Best Video at the MTV Europe Video Awards in 2006. After award season wore off, the men of Simian realized they wouldn't be creating any more music together and split. Ford and Shaw formed the production duo Simian Mobile Disco and released the 2007 album Attack Decay Sustain Release with Wichita Recordings.
