Call her an R&B artist, a sex symbol or a dancer; just don't call her Beyonce's younger sister.Solange Knowles started her career as none other than the opener and backup dancer for her famous sister's group, Destiny's Child, but started in the entertainment industry early on, classically trained in ballet, jazz, tap and modern dance before performing for two years as the female group's backup dancer.
Not much unlike her sister, her father began to groom her for her debut onto the musical world when she was just 14 and signed her to his Music World label in 2002. Her debut single, "Feelin' You, Pt. 2," reached Billboard's R&B/Hip-Hop chart, and she followed up that single with the release of her full-length debut album, Solo Star. Solange was just 16 at the time. Struggling to find a sound of her own, she mixed country, alternative, R&B and reggae with the help of big-time producers like The Neptunes, Timbaland, Rockwielder and the Underdogs. With the album, she was also able to play with writing and found her passion under a pad of paper. Her first real experience with this newfound love was in Kelly Rowland's debut album, Simply Deep.
Not satisfied with simply following in the genre her sister had commercialized, Solange began pursuing an acting career. She starred in Johnson Family Vacation alongside Cedric the Entertainer and Vanessa Williams as well as Bring It On: All or Nothing alongside Heroes actress Hayden Panettiere. But the biggest change in her life game at just 17 years old when she became a wife and a mother. After her son was born, she continued to venture in the writing world, working on all three former Destiny's Child's solo pieces as well as some of the group's final singles. With her son Daniel Baby Julez, she has created the first ever hip-hop inspired toy line, where her son is the face of the brand while Solange gives classic nursery rhymes a new hip-hop twist.
After her varied adventures, the youngster decided it was again time to focus on her music. In 2008, she released her sophomore effort, Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams, which she recorded in downtown Houston on Hadley St.
