Sonique, who was born Sonia Clark, grew up in North London during the 1970s and ‘80s, heavily influenced by disco and the early electronic music movement. For a while during her teen years Sonique was on her own, even living on the streets for large portions of time, but eventually a friend convinced her to pursue music because of her naturally elegant and soulful voice. Sonique, who is of Trinidadian descent, joined up with a reggae band at first, and then began her solo career, landing a contract at Cooltempo. Her first single, "Let Me Hold You" was a surprise hit in England in 1985, and opened the door for Sonique to work with many different dance and pop music artists like S'Express and Bass-O-Matic. While a part of S'Express, which was basically just Sonique and DJ Mark Moore, she helped to create popular dance songs like "Mantra for a State of Mind," "Nothing to Lose," and "Find 'em, Fool 'em, Forget 'em," which can be found on the album Intercourse.
After her stint with S'Express, Sonique branched out on her own once again and began DJing for British clubs. She quickly built up a reputation as a crowd-pleaser with her lively performances on stage. She pioneered a general shift in the art of being a DJ by proving that an artist could be both pleasing to the ear and pleasing to the eye. Sonique toured her DJ skills and also worked as a resident performer at an Ibiza club during the late 1990s.
In 1999 Sonique began releasing solo singles again, and by 2000 the full album Hear My Cry was completed. Hear My Cry contained one of the most popular songs of 2000, the dance club hit "It Feels So Good," which sat atop the British singles charts for a full three weeks in May of 2000.
