Just because some people live on Planet Earth doesn't mean they belong there. Such is the case for Dr. Alex Paterson and Jimi Cauty, the space cadet duo who formed the hypnotic electronic music group Space in 1989 and spent just one short but well-fulfilled year bringing the solar system into line with sheer ambient bliss and radiant functionality. Space's biggest and brightest hit, "A Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain that Rules from the Centre of the Ultraworld," was the closest the duo ever got to the sun, yet the legacy of Space's downtempo beats and introspective music lit the fireball that hurled their style of ambient electronica music onto the main stage of upcoming music genres everywhere.

Before he was one-half of the duo Space, Dr. Alex Paterson was a frontman for the Orb, an ambient techno group out of London, England. Paterson allowed the Orb to radiate with pulsating beats and immeasurable success, having prior experience with house music as part of the A&R department of EG Records. Paterson also had previously worked with the new wave group Killing Joke during the ‘80s, and it was with Joke that the funkmaster met Jimi Cauty, the eventual other half of Space. Paterson and Cauty met through Killing Joke, as Cauty played in the Joke side project Brilliant before going on to found the KLF. The duo KLF dabbled with acid house music while ripping off the music industry, but eventually Cauty and Paterson found each other and started making music together, dubbing themselves Space and working for one whole year to create spacey hits for the masses. Space released their only album, the self-titled Space, in 1990, causing a buzz in the industry. The album contains just eight tracks, one for each planet minus Earth (while Pluto still counted), and the album was well-received but short-lived, as Space disbanded the next year.
