In terms of bragging rights, it doesn't get much better for a band to claim that they were the first act ever played on MTV, and that title goes to none other than the Buggles. If their name doesn't ring any bells their first single, "Video Killed the Radio Star," might. Ding ding ding!
Vocalist and bassist Trevor Horn and keyboardist Geoff Downes came together to form the electro-pop confection that is the Buggles in 1979. The pair, who had met two years prior while both working as session musicians, released "Video Killed the Radio Star" that year and it went straight to the top of the charts in the U.K. Two years later MTV went on air and the both aptly and foreshadowing-titled "Video Killed the Radio Star" was the first video ever broadcast on the burgeoning cable network. The single came from the 1979 album Age of Plastic, which was a futuristic record that contained tracks like "I Love You Miss Robot" and "Kid Dynamo." 1982's Adventures in Modern Recording failed to meet the expectations put forth by the Buggles' debut, largely because by this time Horn and Downes were already working on side projects. It proved to be their last effort as a duo under the moniker the Buggles.
Although Horn and Downes did spawn three U.K. hits after "Video Killed the Radio Star," including "The Plastic Age," "Clean Clean" and "Elstree," they became more interested in producing as opposed to recording. Horn and Downes took hold of Yes' Drama in 1980 and later joined the group to fill in for Rick Wakeman and Jon Anderson. Downes signed with Asia after Yes broke up and Horn formed his own label, ZTT Records, which produces hits for groups like ABC and Frankie Goes to Hollywood.
