In a wave of made-for-radio rock bands in the early 2000s like the Wallflowers, Train and Matchbox Twenty, the Calling fit right in. The rock quartet, composed of high school friends Alex Band (vocals) and Aaron Kamin (instrumentalist), obtained a record contract with RCA in their native Los Angeles soon after forming their duo. The band recruited instrumental players Sean Wollstenhulme (guitar), Billy Mohler (bass), Nate Wood (drums, percussions) and Dino Menegin (guitar) and began recording their first album, Camino Palmero. Released in July of 2001, the Calling's debut album featured the radio hit single "Wherever You Will Go" and sing-along "Unstoppable." "Wherever You Will Go" seemed to be playing on every radio in 2001, earning the Calling the number five spot on the Billboard Hot 100 as well as spots on the Modern Rock Tracks, Mainstream Rock Tracks and Adult Contemporary Charts.
The Calling decided to go it alone when recording their second album, dismissing Wollstenhulme, Mohler, Wood and Menegin. Two was released in June of 2004. Band and Kamin's sophomore effort featured more lit FM hits such as "Things Will Go My Way" and Chasing the Sun," which echo other always dependable radio favorites like U2. The Calling proved that they could record a successful album without supplemental band members; Two made the Billboard 200 Chart and earned plenty of radio play.
After a successful run of radio hits, the Calling declared they were taking a hiatus from the band in 2005. Alex Band and Aaron Kamin both went on to pursue solo efforts but rumors of a reunion continue to linger. The Calling's greatest legacy is undoubtedly the smash single "Wherever You Will Go," which earned the rock band a place among the radio-ready rock bands of the early 21st century.
