Jim Morrison captured the nation's attention with his black leather pants and his onstage antics, which created quite a stir during the 1960s and 1970s. Morrison was the frontman for the popular psychedelic rock band The Doors. The Doors were first formed in Los Angeles in 1965 by UCLA film students Ray Manzarek and Jim Morrison, along with John Densmore and Robby Krieger. The group was highly regarded for Morrison's deep, harmonic voice and his inspirational poetic lyrics. The group signed on with Elektra Records in 1966, and they released their first self-titled album that featured their most popular song "Light My Fire" the following year. Their introduction proved to be an extremely magnificent record that was chock full of sounds that mirrored rock, blues, classical and jazz as well as Morrison's thoughtful poetry. Other songs included on the record included "Break On Through," "The Crystal Ship" and "Take It as It Comes."
The Doors broke the doors wide open on the psychedelic era by blending a plethora of different genres. Morrison was captivating with his chilling, deep vocal abilities and his striking good looks. Their first effort was ground-breaking for the band, and its success proved hard to match for the band. Their records The Soft Parade and L.A. Woman just didn't garner the generous amount of attention as their debut effort, although the latter did exhibit a more blues-oriented appeal and there was no denying that Morrison had a unique gift with words. It was also the final album the group would record with their frontman.
Jim Morrison was heavily influenced by drugs for most of his music career. Unfortunately his instability outweighed his charisma, and he nearly brought the entire band down with him when he was arrested for indecent exposure during a concert in Miami. The big blow came when Morrison took a leave for Paris where he apparently died of a drug overdose. The three surviving members tried to carry on The Doors without him, but eventually disbanded. The Doors were simply non-existent without Jim Morrison.
