In the midst of a chaotic decade full of television classics like Married with Children, Saved by the Bell and Who's the Boss? in the 1980s emerged something more terrific than the sheer madness of the ‘90s; its name was The Simpsons and its creator was Matt Groening. Coining terms (with specific inflections) like "D'oh," "excellent," "don't have a cow, man" and "cowabungah!," the animated television show featured yellow creatures that slightly resemble the everyday American, setting the scene in the suburb of Springfield. The Simpsons capitalized upon the yet-untouched male humor and crudeness, bottling it up into the Simpson family that consisted of family members Homer, Marge, Lisa, Bart and Maggie. Groening's goofy humor shows through in characters like Homer, the alpha male of the family, who is a dim-witted and lazy alcoholic but an overall lovable character. His punk of a son Bart clashes with his brainy sister Lisa and the baby Maggie just hangs around enough to suck on her red pacifier.

It might not sound like a winning combination, but with Groening's traceable humor and distorted depiction of the modern family, The Simpsons has brought family members together for decades. While Homer and Bart are the meat and potatoes of the television show, The Simpsons has made an impression large enough to include guest appearances from the NFL's star quarterback Tom Brady as well as members from the ‘90s boy band *NSYNC. Comedian Conan O'Brien got his start writing for the show, and the 10-time Emmy-winning television program just keeps getting better.

In 2007 the Simpson family made its way to movie theaters across the country as the Simpsons Movie debuted on the big screen. Following a plot of the simple-minded Homer and his accidental cause of an ecological disaster in Springfield, the Simpsons Movie provided kicks for the whole family, earning a nomination for a Golden Globe Award in the process.
