British teen groups were all the rage in the 1960s and the Tremeloes were arguably near the top of the list. Despite much success, they rarely get the same recognition as other bands of the same era, although they probably had more hits and stayed on the charts for more years. The Tremeloes first came together in 1958 in Essex, England. The first lineup featured Brian Poole on vocals, Dave Minden on drums and vocals, Alan Blakley on rhythm guitar and vocals, Alan Howard on bass and Graham Scott on lead guitar. The band wanted to make a group with similar sounds to Buddy Holly and the Crickets and started working on their music.

The band went through lineup changes that featured new musicians as well as the current musicians switching instruments. An important addition to the band was seasoned musician Rick Westwood in the early 1960s. They were soon discovered by producer Jimmy Grant of a BBC music show. They landed spots on radio as well as an audition with Decca Records in 1962. The story goes that Decca records had a choice between a young band of unknowns called the Beatles and the Tremeloes, choosing the Tremeloes.

Although not as famous as the Liverpool legends, the Tremeloes were not a bad investment for Decca. They started by backing other musicians. They released two singles "Twist Little Sister" and "Keep on Dancing," but neither pushed them to success. They made some changes and released a version of "Twist and Shout," making number four in the UK. They again found success with the cover "Do You Love Me." After a slew of top songs, Poole exited the band in 1966. They released many hits without him into the 1970s including "Silence is Golden," "Here Comes My Baby," "Call Me Number One" and "Me and My Life." The band has continued to tour together into the 2000s.
