The Who is one of the best rock ‘n' roll bands of this century, with a quartet that constantly pushed each other's buttons as well as rock music's when they approached new sonic territories both on stage and in the studio. Pete Townshend and John Entwistle met while in school and started playing together in the early ‘60s before Entwistle left to work with another group with Roger Daltrey. When Daltrey dropped his guitar and become vocalist, along with the addition of drummer Keith Moon, the group became The Who. Waiting for their big break the group played at the Marquee Club in London while working odd jobs, and when manager Pete Meaden appeared, a suggested name change (to High Numbers ) and appearance change (sharp suits) that appealed to the mod ‘60s occurred. When their only single failed, the group left Meaden and started working with Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp, who encouraged the boys to embrace mod but also suggested a return to The Who and a more laid-back look.
After an accidental guitar smash while playing at Railway Hotel, buzz began to surround the group pertaining to their wild live shows. As a response to the thrashing guitars and the single "I Can't Explain" The Who got a record contract with Decca Records in both the US and the UK. When the group appeared on the television show Ready, Set, Go the single shot up the charts and followed with several more Top Ten hits. By the mid ‘60s Townsend was writing a lot for the group as they split from the British Decca and signed to Polydor. But while The Who was seeing loads of success in the UK they had yet to break into the US market. With their sophomore album, A Quick One, every member contributed to the record, separating The Who from any other pop groups (the Beatles, Rolling Stones) at the time.
The group has remained one of the most well known pop rock groups of all time, and after the ‘80s turned the boys to drugs and solo careers, the group returned in the ‘00s with a North American tour and more records.
