Aimee Mann, vocalist and bassist who started Til Tuesday with her then boyfriend drummer Michael Hausman, banked on the breakups and heartaches she experienced during the 80s.
After a short stint singing vocals with Young Snakes, Mann gathered up keyboarder Joey Pesce and guitarist Robert Holmes by 1983 to create Til Tuesday. Having studied at the Berklee School of Music in Boston, Mann and the group stayed in the area, hitting up local punk spots for gigs. Til Tuesday eventually caught the attention of Epic Records after a Battle of the Bands win at a local radio station. They signed with Epic and immediately recorded Voices Carry, where the titled track reached the Top 10 in 1986.
Failed relationships and a strong cult following is what made Til Tuesday last as long as it did. "Voices Carry," the only hit single from their debut album, was their first and last claim to fame. A powerful music video, showcasing their punk rock roots, left Tol Tuesday with MTV fans around the country. Reeling after her recent relationship with Jules Shear, Mann and the crew reentered the studio in 1986 to create their second album Welcome Home. The record failed to shatter any more records, but did earn them a more well-known follower Elvis Costello.
After her breakup with Shear, songwriter Mann attempted to create one more hit song with Til Tuesday's final album, Everything's Different Now. Though the album failed to get the attention of not only fans but the media, Mann did gain the support of former cult follower Elvis Costello. Together they wrote a song on Til Tuesdays third and final album. However, proving that sometimes even the hardest relationships do not make for great music, Til Tuesday broke up and Mann headed off for a solo career by 1993. "Voices Carry" remains their only hit song.
