Paul Smith and Jason Greenhalgh are the drum & bass duo Total Science. The pair of prolific producers met in 1987 while they both were living on Blackbird Leys estate in Oxford, England and instantly bonded over their mutual adoration for hip-hop music. Since then, Smith and Greenhalgh have recorded music under various nicknames via various record labels, although they didn't record together until 1994 under the name Funky Technicians. Prior to the release of "Got to Believe", Greenhalgh launched his career with "Freestyle Fanatic" in 1991, which was followed by "Champion Sound," released on the Legend imprint. "Got to Believe" was the first in a string of albums released on labels like Basement, Lucky Spin and Good Looking, which signaled a shift in direction from the dark side to a potent combination of bates and string sections.

In 1997 with the new name Total Science, the pair created the CIA label with Brillo from Timeless after six years of recording singles for other labels. After releasing the EP Silent Reign for Goldie's Metalheadz, the pair issued a remix of Bad Company's "Champion Sound" and secured even more interest in their label. By 2001 Total Science was at the forefront of drum & bass thanks to their debut album Advance (also the name of CIA's sister label, formed in 2000) and their fresh use of old-school arrangements. In 2003, upon returning home after touring the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Brazil and Europe, the duo's pair of labels began showcasing up-and-coming producers like Zero Tolerance, Beta 2, Mathematics and Baron.

After focusing on their labels for a few years, Total Science released Mars Needs Total Science in mid-2006 and the lead single "Never Had a Dream" was an instant success on the U.K. dance charts (and dance floor!) Total Science is currently hard at work on their fourth studio album.
