Wendy Moten was born in Memphis, Tennessee. She grew up singing in the choir at St. Stephen Baptist Church, where her father was the musical director. She attended Overton High School in Memphis and spent her summers singing at the local amusement park, Libertyland, where she was a part of the youth performance ensemble. Libertyland was closed on October 29, 2005, due to lack of tourist interest in the park, and was auctioned off in 2006.
Wendy went on study at the University of Memphis in the ‘80s, spending her spare time singing in local clubs. It was then that former classmate and fellow musician from Overton Kevin Paige recruited her as the background singer in his band after his self-titled debut won him a spot as the opening act for the Debbie Gibson world tour in 1989.
In 1991, Wendy Moten was introduced to Dick Williams, who was a manager and producer at the time. He was able to convince her to record a demo at Cotton Row Studios, giving her a way of breaking into the industry. By this time Wendy was a well-developed and talented R&B singer and had the opportunity to support Michael Bolton at a benefit in New York City. Shortly after that, she signed to EMI/ERG and released her self-titled debut before embarking on tour with Bolton.
Her debut produced a few chart singles, most notably "Step By Step" and "Come in out of the Rain." Eventually Moten landed herself a starring role in the off-Broadway production of Mama I Want To Sing. Her second album was Time for Change, which was released in 1995. It was followed by Christmas Time, which was released the same year on October 25. Her last album was Life's What You Make It in 1996.
