451Matt StollThe Fox Sports brand of football was one of the first available on mobile phones and each year it has undergone noticeable changes. This year’s version provides the same entry-level style of play that previous users should be familiar with and now also includes adjustments and mechanics that make it a much stronger wireless game. Fox Sports Football 06 is played 7-on-7 in two modes: Exhibition and Season. It doesn’t carry a league or player license with it but all teams hail from the recognizable cities. The playbook is very deep (over 150 offensive plays and 30 defensive) to give a wide variety of choices. Each team is rated in four categories and when playing a 16-game season, you can create your own team and adjust the skill level of those categories by dispersing points appropriately. New to this year’s version are a number of key game play improvements. Last year, each touchdown was an automatic seven points. Now, after scoring a touchdown, you have the option of kicking the extra point or going for two. Fumbles and interceptions have a higher presence and the attack between successful run and pass plays is more balanced. An Instant Replay camera has also been included to highlight good performances. The Defense still wanes a bit so it’s still not uncommon to have high scoring games and to get by with just a few select plays. Different weather effects are still included and players have slightly more detail to animation. The over-the-top flaming football makes an appearance as well as the endzone celebration. Menus are clear to understand with offensive plays divided into short, medium and long yardage with a better labeling between running and passing. The game continues to play at a good pace and the inclusion of the Fox Football theme is still nicely done though it tends to play a bit too much. The voice-over is well executed and player grunts, slaps and tackles sound well. Fox Sports Football 06 is unmistakably better than last year’s offering. The tweaks deliver a more satisfying experience for just about anyone wanting to play. Controls are a little shaky since most of the movements are handled by the directional pad and that will cause problems for diagonals, but it’s still playable. More seasoned players may question the difficulty and lack of NFL license but it remains a good choice for those who want an entry-level football game on their mobile phone.
