More about Fantastic Four
478Andy GarciaFollowers of the Fantastic 4 should no doubt be anticipating the new film that looks amazing from the previews. (Here’s hoping it’s more than just a stellar cast surrounded by special effects.) Of course, another superhero movie means another superhero mobile game and with the Fantastic 4, you get the chance to play as Mr. Fantastic, The Invisible Woman, The Thing and The Human Torch.
Each hero has their own signature powers and moves plus punch, duck, block and kick mechanics. Their special power can be activated once a power-up crystal is found. They complete their own unique challenges throughout seven levels based on the plot of the movie, most of which entail collecting a certain number of items or destroying a certain number of bots, except for some of the Mr. Fantastic levels in which case he is bouncing around trying to reach the end-point within a certain amount of time.
Once a level is completed, which is fairly easy considering they feel more like mini-games, you receive a Fantastic 4 quarter bonus. Collect four and your score is quadrupled. However, if you lose a life, a quarter bonus will also be lost. These are important if you wish to upload your score to the leader table online.
The game tends to move quite slow and action buttons also have a slow response time, though this could be attributed to the phone’s capabilities. However, the game’s visuals also remain underwhelming and they remind me most of those from the Atari 2600 days. Seriously, I have no clue why the developer would choose to do this. Characters and backgrounds are flat, blocky and simplistic with minimal colors and there is absolutely no audio present.
The redeeming quality of this Fantastic 4 mobile version is that at the end of the game, you can obtain a cheat for the PlayStation 2 console version. (Of course, this is redeeming only if you do decide to purchase the console game.) And though I can give some slack because of the handset the game was played on, the game remains simplistic and only slightly amusing.
