More about The Apprentice

490Andy GarciaI was on The Apprentice bandwagon during the first two seasons but quickly lost interest when it became clear that it’s all about bickering contestants backstabbing their way to the top. I get enough of that here at work but when I was asked to give this game the once over, I couldn’t pass up the chance to see if I would make a good contestant myself. Featuring “The Donald” and his trusted advisors, Caroline and George, they will put you through the wringer in a collection of business-themed mini-games to compete in who will become the next Apprentice. Will you have what it takes to claw your way to the top, or will you crash and burn? Your first test is selling handbags at an outdoor market. Customers will line up at the table and you’ll have to make the sale. A marker will move from left to right over a gauge that has green and black areas. If you stop the marker on a green area, the sale is made for the price displayed. If you err and stop on the black area, the customer walks away. The second test is a vendor at a stadium. Seated patrons will yell out orders for soda pop or peanuts and it’ll be on you to race to them and hand them their choice. If you run out of items, you’ll have to run into the back and restock. The third test is serving at a sushi bar. Customers will sit at the counter and order up their favorite meal. You must choose and deliver the correct item, then clean up after the customer has left to make room for others. Each of these games is timed and the winner will be determined by how much money is made. When all three have been completed, a second go-round of each will help in eliminating more contestants. The only difference the second time around is that you’ll have to beat your previous money count. If at any time you lose, you’ll be sent to the boardroom where you’ll have to explain yourself to the man. This is also a mini-game in which good comments and bad comments will be floating your way from three directions. To get by and live to work another day, you must stop all bad comments from reaching you and allow all good comments to get through. The final test is positioning volunteers at a Rock Concert. This is the hardest of all the mini-games. Each volunteer has four color blocks and you’ll have to place them so that adjacent colors on all sides match. You’ll have to carefully plan the layout but not waste too much time since a clock is counting down. This last test will determine whether you’re hired or fired. The nice thing about The Apprentice is that it ties in all the mini-games under one general goal, unlike other collections that just throw them in for no reason. However, they still remain fairly simple and one-dimensional. While you can also play each mini-game individually, I would have loved a two-player mode where both would battle it out to become the Apprentice. This certainly could have added a greater appeal, otherwise, i'm still not convinced to get back on The Apprentice bandwagon.
