516Matt StollSay what you will about Pac-Man or Street Fighter II, but this game is the original daddy of all those quarter-munching arcade machines. Released almost 25 years ago, Space Invaders introduced us to the first alien invasion in video games.
Looking every bit, maybe even better than the original, wave after wave of aliens march towards earth, and only one lone shooting turret can stop them. (Well, 3+ actually if you count the extra lives and bonuses.) By controlling your weapon left or right, and hiding behind protective shields, the object is to take out each incoming wave of aliens and their flying saucers to rack up points. Amazingly, this version even includes a popular trick that will give you more points per flying saucer. (For more information on this check out www.klov.com). Eventually, the shields will be destroyed by fire or the alien descent. To make matters worse, the more enemies you eliminate, the quicker their descent.
The sound is amazingly clear and on target with the original. However, the 'alien march' sound effect is missing. Who can forget how the sound effect marked each alien step, getting closer and closer until it had reached its frantic pace? The tension of clearing each alien wave still remains, but without that particular sound effect, some of the anxiety factor is lost.
Space Invaders is another one of those classics that must be experienced by anyone who has an inkling of interest in video games. Whether it be the arcade, console, or mobile version, there is no substitution for the entertainment value that this game has shown throughout the years. It is well suited for mobile, unless you're driving of course, and should provide wave after wave of shoot-em-up fun.
