There is no artist out there like Amon Tobin. The Brazilian-born ex-pat made waves in the U.K. music scene in the mid-'90s with his eclectic mix of ambient, dub, funk, and jazz that is guided by his use of drum 'n bass and hip-hop. Amon Tobin's unusual musical concoctions are the results of his move from Brazil to England in the mid-'80s during the hip-hop take-off and the underground appeal of electro-funk. Tobin forwent a college career after his sampler sounds made their way to the ears of those at Ninebar and Ninja Tune, who persuaded him to drop out of photography school to pursue music full time. Since his complete emersion in music, Tobin has released over eight albums that make him king of the jazz-junglists.Amon Tobin released a trio of EPs and one LP under the name Cujo (Adventures in Foam on Ninebar) before releasing his first LP under his own name, 1997's Bricolage. In 1998 Tobin released Permutation, which was the first of what would become yearly full-length albums each subsequent year (2000's Supermodified and 2002's Out from Out Where among them). After relocating to Montreal, Tobin recorded a live performance for the Solid Steel series and reached the masses by recording the soundtrack for Tom Clancy's popular video game Splinter Cell 3. In 2007 Tobin came out with the studio album Foley Room, which was a departure from his usual work and featured cameos from Kronos Quartet. Foley Room made it to number 13 on Billboard's Top Electronic Albums, proving audiences approved its experimental approach of "field recording." Tobin also collaborated with fellow Ninja Tune artists Coldcut and the Irresistible Force, as well as Brazilian natives Bebel Gilberto and Airto Moreier.
