Aqua made waves in the world of pop music in 1997 when their single "Barbie Girl" was emanating from radios everywhere. Mattel, the company that manufactures Barbie dolls, even sued the Danish foursome over the sexual nature of their hit. The lawsuit was dropped in 2002.Aqua began to form in 1989 when Claus Norreen and Soren Rasted worked together for the soundtrack of a film. René Dif and Lene Grawford Nystrom soon joined them and formed Joyspeed. The group scored a single hit that briefly climbed the Swedish charts, but left group members disappointed. In an attempt at a fresh start, they renamed themselves Aqua and eventually landed a record deal. Their first single, "Roses are Red," stormed up the Swedish charts and netted the group a double-platinum disc. Their next single, "My Oh My," went gold in less than a week and became the fastest-selling Danish single in history. The group released their first LP, Aquarium, in 1997 which was headlined by "Barbie Girl." The song was a smash in the U.S. and garnered the band international recognition. The single went platinum stateside and sold more than one million units in the U.K. "Doctor Jones" and "Turn Back Time," their next two singles off of Aquarium, would become number one hits in the U.K. as well. They followed up Aquarium the next year with Bubble Mix, a record of new versions of previously released songs. The following year the group released a similar record in Aqua Mania Remix. Their most recent album, Aquarius, hit shelves in 2000.The band split up in 2001. Six years later, in 2007, Aqua announced that they would begin touring again and while they didn't have any immediate plans to release another album, they did proceed to give fans some new tracks at their live shows.
