Banda Machos

Banda Machos Biography

Banda Machos formed in 1990 in the Mexican state of Jalisco. Like many Latin groups just begining their careers, Banda Machos started small, playing the local festivals and smaller tours around their home town of Villa Corona. They quickly built a name for themselves and played in successively larger and larger events, eventually taking the stage in large cities like Monterey and Guadalajara, and even Mexico City.Banda Macho's style was loud- with their dozen or so members all typically wearing bright yellow or red traditional Mexican rain coats with black accents and frills, flashy ornaments and boots made for foot-stomping. Banda Machos musical style fit in with other popular Latin music groups like Liberacion, Grupo Bryndis and Palomo, but they also developed a style called la quebradita, which was very popular in the American Southwest, especially Los Angeles.During the mid 1990s Banda Machos toured extensively and even crossed the border to play for fanatical supporters in cities in California and Arizona. They issued a cassette tape titled Serian Las Dos, which was not nearly the hit that they might have expected- possibly because of the album's format in a time when the world was switching to CDs. The band finally found record sales success with their 2000 studio release, Sangre de Indio, although Banda Machos had been releasing albums in one form or another for the better part of 20 years.Averaging about two albums per year, Banda Machos continues to pump out banda, ranchera and Latin pop records at a steady clip. In 2006 they released 20 Mil Heridas, which became one of their most critically acclaimed works and was nominated for a Best Banda Album Grammy Award that same year. Banda Machos shows no signs of slowing down, even though they are coming up on nearly three decades in the business. With the exuberance and musical quality that they have shown time and time again, they ought to be at the forefront of the Latin music genre for many more years to come.
