Bat For Lashes is the creation of British singer/songwriter/instrumentalist/visual artist Natasha Khan. While she does have a lot of adjectives ascribed to her name, the vivid performer deserves each and every one of them since she emerged in 2006 and added on-stage accomplices Ginger Lee, Abi Fry and Lizzy Carey for a round of indie performances.Khan was born in Pakistan in 1979 but now resides in the English seaside town of Brighton. Her musical influences range from Steve Reich and Susan Hiller to Björk and Siouxsie Sioux, and the latter two are evident in Bat For Lashes' sound, which earned them instant indie cred after Khan completed art school and decided to embark upon a musical career. Bat for Lashes' first big performance was in support of CocoRosie in London at the Scala in 2005, and among those in the audience of the sold-out show were Nelle Hooper, Brett Anderson and Björk. Bat For Lashes' celebrity following also includes Jarvis Cocker, Devendra Banhart and Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke, who picked "Horse & I" as one of the tracks on his iTunes playlist.Bat For Lashes' first single "The Wizard" made its digital debut on DiS in early 2006 and was also issued as a 7" on Khan's She Bear imprint that same year. Another indie favorite came in the form of "Trophy," which soared to the top of the U.K. rock charts and paved the way for the LP Fur & Gold that September. The word most used to describe Fur & Gold is haunting, and with themes of nature and animals woven throughout there is a clear sense of fairytale in the album. The instrumental variety of Bat For Lashes includes marching band drums, harpsichord, piano, guitar, hand claps and more striking examples of unexpected sounds. The singles "Prescilla" and "What's a Girl to Do" were released in 2007, and the British songstress continues to garner praise for her songwriting and artistic presentation.
