UK goth rock band, Bauhaus, are known as the founding fathers of their genre. Their music is gloomy and minimalistic, bringing to mind old horror movies such as the 1941 movie Wolfman and James Whale's adaptation of Mary Shelly's terrifyingly haunting novel, Frankenstein. The black and white visuals of murky forest scenes and black peat moors are so closely related to their sound, that their music might almost have been written as the soundtrack to these films, despite the modernity of their music.Their creation of the genre was completely unintentional. But looking back the swirling orchestration and stark tearing themes, could only have led to one conclusion...the birth of the gothic. Founded in 1978 in Northhampton, England, the group included guitarist/vocalist Daniel Ash, bassist/vocalist David J, drummer Kevin Haskins and vocalist Peter Murphy. They originally titled themselves Bauhaus 1919 after the German art movement, but dropped the second half of the title after only a year.Their close association with themes such as the undead and other horror concepts gave them a prominent place at the Batcave, a popular club in London. Listening to their music today, there is a strong sense of fate and a ghostly scent of death found in what they have created. Haunting themes produce flash backs to the more modern horror films such as Dark Water and The Others. The group broke up in July of '83, after only five solid years together. Their sound has continued to be loved and listened to by generations of fans who have followed, giving them a wide range of influence during their years apart. Since then the band has had a couple of reformations. In '98, 20 years after they first played together, the band reformed for a series of tours. Again in 2008 they have reformed to bring Go Away White to their fans. The album is stated to be the last installment the world will see from Bauhaus, the fathers of goth.
