The Los Angeles-based pop/rock band Berlin lit up the ‘80s with sexy and dramatic hit pop songs, and they reached incredible lengths in American history with songs like "Sex (I'm A...)" and the Top Gun theme song "Take My Breath Away." This talented sextet encompassed the new wave synth pop era the U.S. embarked upon in the 1980s, and they dominated every radio station and stage through the ‘90s with big hair and infectious lyrics.Berlin originated as a trio, founded by bassist John Crawford, keyboardist David Diamond and lead singer Terri Nunn. After taking America by storm in 1982 with the hit album Pleasure Victim (which eventually went gold) and even hotter single "Sex (I'm A...)," Berlin tacked on guitarist Rick Olsen, keyboardist Matt Reid and drummer Rob Brill to complete the sextet that would turn the U.S. upside down in the years to follow. Berlin's first full-length album Love Life was released in 1984, going gold. After the album was released, however, Berlin lost half of its group, paring down to just Crawford, Nunn and Brill. The trio proved that less is better when they released the smash romantic song "Take My Breath Away" for the 1986 Tom Cruise film Top Gun.1986's Count Three & Pray included the hit songs "Like Flames" and the title track, but the sturdy album was not strong enough to keep the group from gravitating apart from one another. Nunn abandoned the group to pursue a solo career in 1987, and Crawford and Brill thereby changed their images completely and formed the hard rock band the Big F. After 10 years spent apart from Berlin, the group reunited in 1999 for a performance and a number of hit songs, compiled into 2000's release Berlin Live- Sacred and Profane. The group proved its comeback ability with 2002's Voyeur and 2005's 4 Play, though they could never match the success they garnered in the days of synth pop.
