Big Pokey

Big Pokey Biography

Rapper Big Pokey hails from Houston, Texas, where he was born Milton Powell. The "big" part of his name refers to Pokey's size, as the now full-time musician used to play football at Blinn Junior College and even tried out for the NFL at one point. Big Pokey is a member of the Screwed Up Click, and likely the most successful member at that, who hooked up with DJ Screw in the early ‘90s and laid down rhymes for the DJ's multitude of mixtapes.Big Pokey released his first solo album, Hardest Pit in the Litter, in 1999 and received underground acclaim in the hip-hip community of the South. In 2000 Big Pokey issued a follow-up with D-Game, an album featuring some of his fellow Houston rappers and 808-driven beats. The next year saw Big Pokey collaborating with Wreckshop Wolfpack on Collabo but he returned with solo effort Da Sky's da Limit in 2002. Big Pokey has dropped rhymes for the likes of Big Moe, Lil' Flip, Lil' Keke, Chamillionaire and Big Hawk, and his 2005 collaboration with Paul Wall, "Sittin Sidewayz," earned a spot on the Top 100 chart. In 2008 KOCH Records announced the addition of Big Pokey to their hip-hop roster with the release of Evacuation Notice, featuring "Boss Hogg On Candy" (featuring Slim Thug), "U Can Hate" (featuring Chris Ward and Slim Thug) as well as cameos from Paul Wall and Lil' Keke. 2008 also saw the release of Bog Pokey's Hurricane Sensei and made the rapper among the who's-who in the Southern rap game. Big Pokey is known for his size and his Southern style, mid-tempo beats and doesn't appear to be slowing down his rap game as he takes over the South.
