Although most commonly known as the "Fifth Beatle," Billy Preston's career has spanned over five decades and features collaborations with Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, the Jackson Five, Sly and the Family Stone, Barbara Streisand, Syreeta Wright, Sammy Davis Jr., Quincy Jones and, of course, the Fab Foursome.Billy Preston was a child prodigy, playing W.C. Handy in St. Louis Blues and displaying his exceptional organ skills for the likes of Little Richard and Ray Charles, but it was as a session musician that he began a relationship with the Beatles. Preston was the only person to ever be included on the recording credits of the pop legends' albums Let It Be, Abbey Road and White Album, also appearing alongside Paul, John, Ringo and George in their films The Complete Beatles and Let It Be. Preston, who signed with the Beatles' label Apple Records in the ‘60s, also performed alongside the original boy band at their historic final concert.Aside from being a key player in "Beatlemania," Preston had a successful solo career that included smash singles "Will It Go Round in Circles," "Nothing From Nothing," "Space Race" and the Grammy-winning "Outta Space." The multi-talented Preston was an accomplished songwriter, penning the lyrics to Joe Cocker's romantic ballad "You Are So Beautiful," as well as "Fastbreak," from the box office hit of the same name. Preston continued to remain a force in the music industry in his later years (touring with The Funk Brothers and Stevie Winwood as late as 2004,) most notably for being hailed the first black musical director of the late-night TV show Nightlife and for his touching performance at the George Harrison tribute concert, until this industry great passed away in 2006. Although his greatest legacy remains as the "Fifth Beatle," Billy Preston's influence on the music industry in his long career is immeasurable.
