Billy Ray Cyrus

Billy Ray Cyrus Biography

Long before he was known for being "Miley's dad" in reference to his preteen superstar daughter, Billy Ray Cyrus was topping the early ‘90s charts with his country-rock classic "Achy, Breaky Heart." The supposed one-hit wonder emerged after nearly a decade of obscurity to find fame alongside his daughter on Disney's cult television show Hannah Montana, and has proven that the country music scene was just waiting for his return. In 1992 it was hard to escape the hit single "Achy, Breaky Heart." The song was everywhere, and it proved inescapable for Billy Ray Cyrus as well. The country singer, who was unable to match the success of his most famous song, started off with dreams of becoming a baseball star, not a singer. Cyrus left his native Kentucky with a baseball scholarship at Georgetown but once he picked up a guitar he knew music was his destiny. Cyrus formed Sly Dog with his brother and the group eventually landed a gig as a house band for an Ironton, Ohio club. A fire destroyed the band's equipment in 1984, prompting Cyrus to move to L.A. and then the country music haven of Nashville, where he signed with Mercury Records. Some Gave All was a crossover success thanks to "Achy, Breaky Heart," which spent five weeks atop the country charts, and was followed by 1993's It Won't Be the Last. The success of Cyrus' blockbuster songs proved a foil for his career, as his sophomore album didn't come close to matching the success of his first (although it went platinum). Four albums followed in the next four years, but their mediocre record sales matched Cyrus' falling star. The new millennium sparked a comeback for Cyrus, who appeared in sitcom Doc, released 2003's Time Flies and Other Side (a gospel album) and in 2006 he appeared alongside his daughter Miley on Disney's Hannah Montana and released Wanna Be Your Joe. As the ratings for Hannah Montana skyrocketed, Cyrus released 2007's Home at Last and 2008's Love Songs and proved that while his star dimmed for a while, he is now shining brightly alongside his talented daughter.

Call Billy Ray Cyrus the comeback kid of country. In 1992 Cyrus made history with his breakout hit "Achy, Breaky Heart," which remained atop the country music charts seemingly forever. Cyrus' smash success was also his downfall, because no matter how hard he tried, the singer couldn't escape the song that made him famous, nor could he match the standout sensation with his other records. Cyrus disappeared from the spotlight and was deemed another flash-in-the pan until he emerged nearly a decade later with his teenage daughter by his side. Cyrus starred in a television sitcom and released two albums in 2003 which caused a buzz in the music industry, but it was when he appeared alongside daughter Miley on the Disney Channel's popular television show Hannah Montana that fans said, "He's back!" The father-daughter duo released the successful single "Ready, Set, Don't Go" in 2008 and Billy Ray Cyrus' name was once again atop the country music charts.
