The post-Hootie and the Blowfish era found Blessid Union of Souls topping charts. The group's adult contemporary sound had huge success in radio play and Top Ten hit singles throughout the '90s.Blessid Union of Souls was created in Cincinnati in 1990 by vocalist and songwriter Eliot Sloan, and guitarist and songwriter Jeff Pence. Finding former Ozzy Osbourne's keyboardist C. P. Roth, and R&B drummer Eddie Hedges, the group secured a sturdy lineup. Hedges and Sloan had previously worked together in the mid-‘80s with the R&B group The Movies, who had briefly signed with CBS.Their name, purposely spelled incorrectly to formulate perfect pronunciation, was from a line in an episode of M*A*S*H. The group created a demo tape in 1992, leading to a recording contract with EMI. Home took two years to produce, but gained early success as local Ohio radio stations began playing singles, like Billboard's number eight "I Believe," prior to the 1995 debut album release. The follow up single, "Let Me Be the One," was featured on the ever popular ABC soap opera All My Children, and found a spot in Billboard's Top 40.Switching to Capitol after the fall of EMI, bassist Tony Clark joined Blessid the next year. Sophomore effort Blessid Union of Souls didn't gain the same commercial success as did their previous album, but the often Christian sentiments of lyricist Sloan remained classy and collected. For this second album, the group collaborated with Tommy Sim, Grammy winner for his inspirational song writing abilities. 1999 saw Walking off the Buzz, followed by 2001's collection Singles. Perception was released independently in 2005, and their latest, Close to the Edge was released in September 2006 with Torque Records. Close to the Edge combined eight tracks from the indie Perception, along with four new songs that displayed Blessid's effervescent talent.
