British Sea Power

British Sea Power Biography

British Sea Power is a group of lads from Cumbria and West Yorkshire, England, who decided to form a band back in 2000 and are now living on the beautiful coast, in Brighton. The group plays indie rock and features large stuffed birds and militaristic uniforms in their concerts. This quirky group is made up of vocalist and guitarist Yan, guitarist Noble, bassist and vocalist Hamilton, and drummer Wood. Their wild performances won them their first contract with Rough Trade's Geoff Travis.British Sea Power's first album was the appropriately titled The Decline of British Sea Power. The album showed the world the band's unconventional pop-rock to a particular effect. Their sound is something that ranges between post-punk and something more provocative. Their eccentricities, spontaneity and inquisitive lyrics bring in subjects that might often be thought far too deep for such a new band. Subjects such as Russian literature, Czech history and socio-political figures are all explored. The album gained the group some of the recognition that they deserved, and set them on the road to success.Open Season came next. Accentuated string arrangements move in harmony with wistful vocals, and how that coincides so well with the electric and acoustic guitars is only a matter for speculation, but somehow it works. The openness and honesty of the band is something that has won them respect. Open Season had a good standing in the European Top 100 and hit the 30s on Top Heatseekers and Top Independent Albums. Do You Like Rock Music was their most recent album, released on January 9, 2008, it proved afresh that the group is one to be taken seriously. Once again the group did well on the European Top 100. In the US it surpassed the previous album, peaking at number five on Top Heatseekers.

"British Sea Power is the band for you if you are looking for a group with something more intellectual that the norm. This pop-rock group is a one-of-a-kind, and they now have two of their songs available as cell phone ringtones at PlayPhone. ""It Ended on an Oily Stage"" is one of the most popular songs from the group, and is certain to be a welcome break from the ordinary ringtones that generally sound something like a 1930s space drama. Also available from the same group is the song - ""Please Stand Up"" - which is also a great selection.""It Ended"" starts out with the lyrics ""Everything you said was true/Everything you did was you/Everything I started with her/Ended on an oily stage."" It ends with ""He found God/In a Wiltshire field, and you did not/I, I headed for the costalry/Regions of mind/To see what I could find."" ""Please Stand Up"" says ""Take me somewhere quite please/These motorway exit gates/Are calling to me dearly/And I need a place to go."""
