"Some groups meet when they are still kids, but Calle 13 hooked up earlier than most. They met as toddlers when Rene Perez's mother married Eduardo Cabra's father. Their group's name came from the place where Perez lived, 13th Street, and Cabra would come visit. That is also where they get their nicknames in the band. Perez's is ""Resident"" while Cabra's is ""Visitor."" Before they came together as a group, they both developed their musical interests separately.Cabra started his musical education when he was only six years old. He has studied at the Music Conservatory as well as the Manolo Acosta School of the Arts. He plays the piano, saxophone, flute and guitar. He also played on the streets and learned about different styles of music there. He went to college for accounting and IT communications. Meanwhile, Perez always had an interest in the arts and wrote scripts, songs and poetry. His mother was an actress named Flor Joglar, who helped nurture his appreciation for writing and drama. He went to school at the Escuela de Artes Pasticas in his home country before attending Savannah University to study animation. He tried many artistic outlets while living in Spain after he left the University.A mutual love for music would bring the stepbrothers back together to form Calle 13. It didn't take them long to get a record deal, and they released their self-titled debut album in 2005. The album made it to number six on the Top Latin Albums chart as well as number three on the Top Heatseekers chart and 189 on the Billboard 200 chart. They followed it up with Residente o Visitante in 2007, which reached to top of the Top Latin Albums chart, number 13 on the Top Rap Albums and number 52 on the Billboard 200. They released De Atras Vienen in 2008 and are still pushing their musical style with every new release."
