Carly Simon is one of the long-running artists of the last century whose excellent musical ability has carried her into this one. She was the youngest child in a very musical family, her father was the famous Richard Simon who co-founded the Simon and Schuster publishing company and played classic piano. Her oldest sister Joanna became a professional opera singer. Carly's start in music was as a part of a duo with her other sister Lucy, who would go on to write the music for the Broadway show The Secret Garden. They started out in the summer of '64 singing at The Moors, a bar in Provincetown, Massachusetts. The girls called themselves The Simon Sisters and eventually had a chart single "Winkin' Blinkin' and Nod."Carly's solo debut took place in February of 1971, with her solo hit "That's the Way I've Always Heard it Should Be." It was an anti-marriage single which she co-wrote with Jacob Brackman. The next year she married childhood acquaintance James Taylor, who she divorced in 1981. The ‘70s and ‘80s were successful years for her, during this time she had a number of chart singles, including "Give Me All Night" and "Let the River Run." But they broke up not too long after starting when Lucy left to get married. The ‘90s was a hard decade for Carly. She created one of her most fascinating albums, Letters Never Sent which she wrote entirely herself. Her mother died while she was writing this album, and in 1997 Carly was diagnosed with breast cancer. After a successful battle with the cancer, involving a mastectomy and chemotherapy, she wrote and recorded The Bedroom Tapes. In 2007 she divorced her husband, James Hart, who she was married to for twenty years. She has two children Sara Maria, born January 7, 1974 and Benjamin Simon, born January 22, 1977.
