Chaka Khan

Chaka Khan Biography

Chaka Khan, born Yvette Marie Stevens, formed her first music group when she was just 11 years old in her hometown of Chicago. In high school Chaka toured with the Motown group Afro-Arts Theater. She dropped out of high school and bounced from group to group before striking gold when she teamed up with Andre Fisher and Kevin Murphy to form Rufus.Rufus became one of the top funk groups in the 1970s and saw multiple albums go platinum before Chaka left for a solo career in 1978. Her self-titled debut was spearheaded by the single "I’m Every Woman," which would become a hit yet again more than a decade later as a cover by Whitney Houston. With her following two albums, Naughty and What Cha’ Gonna Do For Me, Chaka failed to experience success similar to her Rufus days.It wasn’t until 1984 that Chaka Kahn’s solo career really took off when her album I Feel for You went platinum. The title track, an adaptation of a Prince song, won her a Grammy. Her next album, Destiny, kept her near the top of the R&B Charts, as did her 1988 release C.K. As her mainstream popularity began to fade, Chaka relocated to Europe for a period before releasing a duet with Ray Charles in 1990 entitled "I’ll Be Good for You." The song won Chaka her second Grammy. After laying low for more than half a decade, Chaka reappeared on Prince’s independent label in 1998 with her record Come 2 My House. Chaka collected yet another Grammy six years later for her performance of Marvin Gaye’s "What’s Going On" with the Funk Brothers in Standing in the Shadows of Motown. This marked the third Grammy for the singer. That same year Chaka showed a different side of her when she released a collection of jazz interpretations on Classikhan.Chaka continued to maintain a busy touring schedule for the next few years while she recorded Funk This, a mix of funk originals and covers that served as a bit of a tribute to the music through which she got her start. Chaka Khan has endured through plenty of changes in the music industry as well as the transformations of mainstream music. Her resume of platinum albums as both a solo artist and the member of a group, along with her trio of Grammy Awards, is nothing short of impressive. She is still making music and bringing all the energy that she always has from the very beginning of her illustrious career.
