If you have never heard of flamenco chill than you are missing out! The trio Chambao from Malaga, Spain were pioneers of the genre, which they practically invented by fusing the vocal style and passionate performance of traditional Adalusian flamenco with electronic music, specifically chillout. The original members of Chambao (La Mari, El Edi and Dani,) formed in 2001 in Spain and were part of Flamenco Chill, a Sony compilation, in 2002. Chambao contributed eight songs on the record, with Mari taking the part of lead vocals and Edi and Dani contributing the instrumentation.Chambao released their first solo full-length album, Endorfinas en la Mente, in 2004. The album featured Italian electronia expert Bob Benozzo on production and was followed by Pokito a Poko the next year. Dani was featured only minimally on the album and departed Chambao prior to its wrap-up in the studio and release. The band was depleted even further when Edi left Chambao after touring in support of Pokito a Poko, leaving Mari the only Chambao member left standing. The singer endured a battle with breast cancer and emerged triumphant, returning to the stage and studio with a new incarnation of Chambao, featuring a seven-piece backing band. The reinvigorated Chambao released their most recent effort, Con Otro Aire, in 2007. The group's fourth studio album featured Mari composing, arranging and producing and the result was a Spanish album infused with African and Mexican influences.Chambao made a splash on the Spanish music scene by inventing flamenco chill, and although the lineup has changed considerably since their formation the group continues to expand and alter the genre through their four studio albums. With vocalist Mari now at the helm, albeit backed by a seven-piece band, Chambao is currently at its best and fans can't wait to see what will happen next.
