With floor-length hair and a sister like Loretta Lynn, Crystal Gayle could not have escaped notoriety if she had tried. Best known in the ‘70s and ‘80s with classic country oldies like "Why Have You Left the One You Left Me For" and "Don't it Make My Brown Eyes Blue," Gayle is one country songstress who will never fade behind the new wave of contemporary pop-ish modern country artists.Crystal Gayle, whose real name is Brenda Gail Webb, was born in Paintsville, Kentucky but raised in Wabash, Indiana. Country blood ran through her veins, and her older sister Loretta Lynn inspired her to take up singing and playing the guitar at a young age. As soon as she graduated from high school, Gayle signed with Lynn's label Decca, changing her name after the Krystal hamburger chain and coming out with the debut single "I've Cried (The Blues Right Out of My Eyes)." The song was an instant country Top 40 success, and it framed her incredible career from there. Wanting to break away from Lynn's shadow, Gayle eventually left Decca and signed with United Artists in 1974, where she released her first Top Ten hit "Wrong Road Again."Gayle's success absolutely exploded from here, and not long after she tried her hand at producing crossover hits, starting with "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue." The jazz-inspired ballad hit number one on the country charts and number two on the pop charts in 1977, winning a Grammy and preparing the world for the domination that was Crystal Gayle. The talented all-around artist continued releasing hits through ‘80s, and even came back with a Greatest Hits album in 2007 that put her name on the charts for the first time in almost 20 years, proving that the legendary Gayle was still as popular as ever.
