"Like painter Vincent van Gogh, DJ Screw didn't have a successful career until after his death. Six feet under, DJ Screw had an entire album dedicated to him, released almost a year after his November 2000 overdose. The Screw Heads Forever & a Day is a 16-track album dedicated to the Texas producer and remixer.Born Robert Earl Davis Jr., he was born in Bastrop, Texas and grew up in Houston. He dropped out of high school to pursue music and made a name for himself in the early ‘90s when he requested that several hot rappers join him on his Screw tapes. Jamming on the tapes, Screwed Up Click developed from Screw's innovations. As p2p programs were becoming popular, the Houston based group found themselves nationally known for their modern hip-hop, leading to mainstream released, like ""All Screwed up, Vol. 1,"" ""3 N The Mornin' Part 1,"" and ""All Work, No Play.""Though for the most part DJ Screw remained in the underground scene, he kept a loyal and strong fan base due in part to programs like Napster. When he opened up Screwed Up Records and Tapes in Houston in 1998 he was able to sell more of his own cassettes and the hundred-plus mixes that he had created in the few years since he launched his business. In the mid ‘90s Priority Records offered DJ Screw a record deal, but he turned it down, proving that the music was more important than the money. He continued to release mixtapes, including June 27 and The Final Chapter. He saw success via prodigies, not only in fellow Houston rappers like Chamillionaire and Paul Wall, but also in Lil' Flip's hit album, Game Over. An advocate of the ""syrup sippin'"" age, a Southern rap phenomenon that involved codeine-infused cough syrup, DJ Screw overdosed on a mixture of codeine and drugs in November 2000."
