"Digable Planets began to create a synthesis of jazz and hip-hop in the early ‘90s. While their name caused interesting sensations, the group began working towards sounds and themes charged with humanitarian and philosophical musings. The group was made up of three players, who joined together with excellent creative conglomeration. Butterfly was born Ishmael Butler in Brooklyn, New York. Ladybug, also known as Silver Springs, Maryland native Mary Ann Vierra, was of Brazilian descent. These two artists began to collaborate after they met at university in Massechusetts. They were eventually joined by Philadelphia native Doodlbug, also known as Craig Irving. The group released their first single, ""Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)"" in 1993, piquing interest with their fascinating moniker. The album was a success, receiving excellent reviews and commercial success across the board. It peaked in the top ten in Hot R&B/Hip-Hop singles and tracks. The album which followed was Reachin'(A New Refutation of Time and Space), which peaked at number 15 on the Billboard 200. The album was intense and powerful without being over-sung or over-dramatized, performances by the group's members were smooth, strong and well-delivered.Following their initial success the group continued their strong run with their second album Blowout Comb which was also outrageously successful. They outperformed their first album musically and scored well in the charts, peaking in the top 40 on the Billboard 200 and the top 20 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. Unfortunately the band dissolved shortly after the release of their second album due to some creative differences. A few weeks before the group's ten year anniversary they decided to reform to produce another album. They satisfied their fan's musical hunger in the meantime by releasing a compilation. Beyond the Spectrum - The Creamy Spy was a compilation that introduced the members new performance names Cherrywine (Butterfly), Ladybug Mecca, and Cee Knowledge (Doodlebug.)"
