Neo-soul multi-talent Dwele has been writing songs ever since his father was murdered when the singer/songwriter/producer was just ten years old. Born Andwele Gardner, Dwele was introduced to music with the songs of Motown royalty like Steve Wonder and Marvin Gaye. Dwele spent a year at Wayne State studying music before exploring the avenue of making music by himself at home. That avenue eventually produced a demo tape, The Rize, which gained him some recognition in his hometown of Detroit. His local status led to collaborations with the Motor City-based Slum Village and Philadelphia rapper Bahamadia. When Dwele's exceptional songwriting ability landed him a deal with Virgin, he released Subject in 2003. Subject was met with a warm reception from European audiences and ignited a European tour. Dwele's unique approach to R&B accompanied by his affinity for jazz seemed to resonate with listeners. Dwele's follow-up effort, 2005's Some Kinda, makes for an interesting blend of hip-hop, jazz and R&B. His most recent album, 2008's Sketches of a Man, was a back to the basics kind of experience for Dwele on which he a considerable amount of time and effort, similar to his debut disc.Dwele is a spontaneous artist and never goes into an album with any preconceived notions about what subject matter he's going to focus on or what specific sound he's looking to produce. He's proficient in piano, trumpet, guitar and bass, which enables him to experiment with a variety of sounds. Dwele has worked with artists like Kanye West and Common, but remains extremely open to collaborating with any artist of just about any genre. He's always looking to branch out into new directions and any artist that can help him broaden his reach is welcomed with open arms.Dwele is also expanding his repertoire as an artist by experimenting with sketching and painting, exemplified on the packaging of Sketches of a Man, but music remains his true love. Dwele enjoys being on the road where his shows have been generating some buzz. Dwele's performance on stage ranges from singing to playing a multitude of instruments, all of which is inspired by his hometown Detroit. Dwele credits the city and his experiences there as the central influence on the lyrics, style and general passion encompassed in his music. With his versatility and innovative mind, Dwele's options both musically and personally are essentially limitless.
