"Genesis formed when Peter Gabriel met Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford met Anthony Phillips in high school. The two duos combined in 1967 to form a quartet called Genesis that would specialize in progressive theatrical rock music during the midst of the psychedelic music explosion. It would be nearly a decade before Genesis would secure their first success with their seventh album, a soundtrack for their stunning stage show The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. Phil Collins joined the band as drummer in the early ‘70s and guitarist Steve Hackett was added to the lineup as well, although Gabriel left Genesis in 1975 and would later be recognized as a major talent. Collins filled in for Gabriel on vocals for the release of A Trick of the Tail, which outsold the band's previous releases, but Hackett departed in 1977 and Genesis regrouped as a trio. The aptly titled ...And Then There Were Three was released one year later and spawned U.K.-charting single ""Follow You, Follow Me.""Genesis switched directions for the 1980s, a change that would prove to be commercially lucrative for the band, with radio-ready singles from 1980's Duke and 1981's Acab. Banks, Collins and Rutherford returned to the studio for 1983's eponymously-titled album, which included ""Mama"" and ""Home By the Sea,"" two of Genesis' most beloved songs. Three years later Invisible Touch shattered previous records for the band with five Top Ten singles in the U.S., and the tour supporting the album was the group's highest-selling yet. The trio took time off to pursue solo projects but reconvened in 1991 for We Can't Dance, which sold over 10 million copies and became the band's best seller despite worries that Collins' successful solo career would hinder the group effort. Collins officially left Genesis in 1996 and vocalist Ray Wilson was brought aboard for the release of the less successful Calling All Stations. The late ‘90s saw Genesis issuing some previous works in compilations, and although they have yet to release another album of new material, one can't help but think the band will persevere."
