Grace Jones

Grace Jones Biography

"Grace Jones was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1952. She embarked on a modeling career in New York City after attending Syracuse University in upstate New York. It was on the New York club scene that her lurid style combined with the visually-driven nature of the recording industry earned her a record deal with Island. While her first few records failed to make an impact, Jones did gain a reputation among the New York gay crowd for her sexual live performances. She broke through in 1980 with Warm Leatherette, a transitional album that saw Jones depart from the disco-based sound of her previous work for a more pop-driven feel. The album, propelled by the single ""Private Life"" and Jones' outstanding effort in the studio, marked her first commercial success.Nightclubbing followed a year later and with it came a new, androgynous image for Jones. The record would prove to be the most successful effort in her career, making a splash on both the Black Albums and Pop Albums charts. Living My Life followed in 1982.After the release of Living My Life, Jones actively pursued an acting career, appearing in films such as the James Bond picture A View to Kill and the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie Conan the Destroyer. After a three year recording hiatus, Jones returned in 1985 with the autobiographical Slave to the Rhythm. The record featured a heavy R&B influence spliced with occasional conversation about Jones' life.1986's Inside Story marked what many consider to be the end of Jones' relevant album work. The single ""I'm Not Perfect (But I'm Perfect for You)"" was her last hit off of a full-length. Jones would release several more albums, none of which created much buzz, but did hit it big one last time in 1993 with the single ""Sex Drive,"" which landed at number one on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart."
