Hey Bay Bay became a national catch phrase in 2007 thanks to the infectious lyrics of Southern rap star Hurricane Chris, whose steady storm on the music scene is just beginning.Hurricane Chris is a product of the Dirty South, a hotbed for rappers that gave birth to the likes of Nelly and Lil Wayne, specifically of Shreveport, LA. Hurricane Chris, who has been perfecting his rhymes since he was just nine years old, generated local buzz with his singles Yep and Ya Hear Me but really caught his break when legendary local DJ Hollywood Bay Bay sparked an idea for a single. Hurricane Chris witnessed as Hollywood, a leader of Shreveport's ratchet (similar to crunk or hyphy), was welcomed to a club by fans chanting Hey Bay Bay! Hurricane Chris changed the phrase into A Bay Bay, which became Shreveport's answer to the popular phrase fo sho thanks to the help of the Lava House promotion crew and record label located in the infamous neighborhood of Cedar Grove. Hurricane Chris was already part of Lava but watched as they released popular singles Ratchet and the song's remix with Lil' Boosie until A Bay Bay caught on. Lava House issued the single and Mr. Collipark of Atlanta liked what he heard, signing Hurricane Chris (who was just 18 at the time!) to J Records in 2007.51/50 Ratchet, Hurricane Chris' major label debut was released later that year, featuring the breakthrough single A Bay Bay as well as other chant-worthy tracks like The Hand Clap. The young Louisiana rapper has nowhere to go but up after securing instant success and spawning a national catch phrase in 2007.
