Candid and open about his life and his opinions on music, J. Holiday is one of the more recent stars of hip hop. He was born in Washington D.C. into a very musical family. His mother, Frances is a pastor, who used to sing gospel songs with her sisters. Holiday's older sister has supplied backing vocals for Crystal Waters. His father died when he was just eleven years old, informing much of the next few years of J. Holiday's life, as the family frequently relocated around D.C.. He has endured many obstacles throughout his life and, as a result has many many accomplishments to boast of.Holiday has had two key events on his road to musical success. In ninth grade he entered a talent show where he showcased his musical ability on stage for the first time and realized his passion for singing. During high school he also discovered Marvin Gaye, whose music eventually led him to other artists including Donny Hathaway and Al Green. These artists became his inspiration along with newer groups including Boyz II Men and more surprisingly Outkast.Despite the fact that Holiday's talent was becoming known, local bands were not successful in recruiting him, because his mother was set on him finishing high school. The waiting paid off in the end, although the first few years following high school proved more difficult. In cooperation with manager Corey Green, he started the group 295. It was a trio named after the famous thoroughfare between Washington D. C. and Baltimore, Maryland. His debut solo album Back of My ‘Lac, was released on October 2, 2007 and it met with amazing success. It had two chart singles "Bed" and "Suffocate." He has become known for his satiny croon, and soulful, smoky vocals. Not only is his music popular but it is also honest, as Holiday is determined to keep himself true to his talent.
