Jaguares, the Spanish word for the vicious animal the jaguar, is a symbol of strength in Mexico. Likewise, the band Jaguares is a symbol of musical strength and dominance, both in Mexico and in other Spanish-speaking countries like Colombia, the U.S. and all of Central America. Formed by Saul Hernandez, Alfonso Andre and Cesar “Vampiro” Lopez in 1995, Jaguares has enjoyed remarkable success, a huge fan base and a number of hit songs that keep the mighty Jaguares rockin’ and rollin’.Jaguares started out from the Mexico City rock band Califanes, but after a after a conflict between band members Saul Hernández and Alejandro Marcovich, lead singer Hernández and drummer Alfonso Andre changed the band’s name and switched up band members, inducting guitarist Jose Manuel Aguilera and bassist Federico Fong into their tribe. The band’s first release as the Jaguares, El Equilibrio de Los Jaguares, came out in 1996, and despite the shunned image of Mexican rock bands at the time due to violence in the late ‘60s, the Jaguares beat the odds of defeat, becoming an immediate success among Latin communities.El Equilibrio de Los Jaguares made the Billboard charts for Top Latin Albums, paving the way for the tribe’s sophomore album, 1999’s Bajo el Azul de Tu Misterio. Several supporting musicians contributed to tracks on the album, including a string section, and when it was released the double album became the highest debuting alternative rock album on the Billboard Latin charts. The 1999 release also opened the doors of commercial success for the Jaguares, and led the band’s next series of albums, 2001’s Cuando la Sangre Galopa, 2002’s El Primer Instinto and 2005’s Cronicas de un Laberinto, into a whirlwind of award-winning notoriety, including everything from dozens of hit singles to numerous sold-out concerts.
