Jamelia

Jamelia Biography

"Most people should never go anywhere near a karaoke machine. But there are some that have genuine talent - even professional level talent. Jamelia Davis is one of those. At the age of 12, the English singer received a karaoke machine, quickly forming an unbreakable attachment to it. In a few short years, her capable voice had been captured on tape and sent to record executives at Parlophone, who were so impressed that they give the 15-year-old a record contract. They worked with her until she was 18, issuing the single ""So High"" at that time. It didn't attract much notice, but her subsequent singles, most especially ""Money,"" earned heavy radio airplay. ""Money"" actually placed on the U.K. Top Five. After becoming pregnant, she took two years off to tend to her child. After that, she finally released her debut album, Drama, but it failed to attract notice. Thank You, released in 2003, proved to be her breakthrough. ""Superstar"" was the major single off that record, scoring high on three U.K. charts, but the title track of the album also did fairly well. In 2004, Parlophone released a new version of the album, including new songs. One of them was ""See It in a Boy's Eyes,"" written by Coldplay frontman Christ Martin. The track shot up the charts to become a Top Five single, and helped promote her first live tour with her as the headlining act.Comparisons to Beyonce were rife in the music press, and Jamelia kept her public image up by becoming a high-profile advocate of different charities. In 2006, Jamelia returned from the studio with Walk With Me, which became a huge success. It also proved the artist could be versatile. While previous albums explored hip-hop and R&B, this one was based in pop."

"Jamelia has a very fortunate success story. Discovered at 15 when her cousin sent a recording of her singing on a karaoke machine to record executives, she embarked on a music career that could have quickly imploded. Her company had to work with her to develop the skill necessary to be a major artist. By 18, she had released a single that went nowhere. Her debut fell flat as well. But on her second record, the U.K.'s R&B fans heard the talent that Parlophone executives knew was there all along.More recently, Jamelia has begun moving in a pop direction, with her last album, Walk With Me, sampling Depeche Mode and the Stranglers. But it's her soulful R&B that really attracted audiences to begin with. Naturally, Playphone has one of the best of these tracks available as a downloadable ringtone. ""Thank You,"" a song about breaking away from a physically abusive relationship, was inescapable when it was first released. Now you can put it on your cell phone and here it whenever you get a call! Go ahead and sample the ringtone before you download it. It sounds great in polyphonic format. Try it out!"
