While Jennifer Knapp has remained relatively quiet as of late, just a few years ago she was pushing the boundaries of Christian music and showing listeners a different side of faith. Knapp grew up in Kansas in a nonreligious family. She had an interest in music from a young age and was classically trained in trumpet. She excelled and received a music scholarship to Pittsburg State University. It was there that she met other students who were Christians, which got her thinking about spiritual matters. She soon found a faith in God, and her music started to change along with her life. Her unique take on Christian music was gaining a following as Knapp performed in the Midwest and sold her demo. She recorded an indie album called Wishing Well, which caught the eye of Gotee Records. She signed a record deal and released Kansas in 1998. The album showcased her both as a musician and a songwriter. Knapp didn't shy away from the tougher parts of life and her fans responded positively. Her mix of folk and rock music and confessional style of song were a breath of fresh air for a genre that had heard little of brutal honesty like Knapp's before. Her sophomore release, Lay It Down, dropped in 2000 and pushed Knapp into the forefront of the music world by reaching number 77 on the Billboard 200. Combined, her first and second releases on Gotee sold more than 850,000 copies. She followed it up with The Way I Am in 2001, which reached number 130 on the Billboard 200. She has released two greatest hits albums, one in 2003 and the other in 2005, as well as a live album in 2006. She has not yet given word on when she will release another album, but it is sure to reveal more of this deep artist.
