"While boy bands like Boyz II Men and B2K were lighting up the 1990s with wholesome R&B music, the groups' nemesis Jodeci was tearing up the scene with sexually explicit and wild music as the R&B bad-boy band of the ‘90s. Jodeci took the more risqué path on their way to urban R&B success and it worked wonders for them as the group eventually came out on top with three number one albums and five number one singles in their musical reign. The quartet Jodeci is the product of two sets of brothers; ""JoJo"" Hailey and Cedric ""K-Ci"" Hailey, joined by Donald ""DeVante Swing"" DeGrate and his brother Dalvin DeGrate, and the band's name is the combined alias of all the group members except for Dalvin. Both musical families were from Charlotte, North Carolina, and the boys grew up singing gospel music, their songs even finding their way to radio stations. JoJo and DeVante toyed around with the idea of forming a group together in their teens, but before they could make demos to take to New York their brothers had joined them and they all went to New York together, easily scoring a record deal with Uptown Entertainment. Jodeci's debut album Forever My Lady debuted in 1991, reaching number one on the Heatseekers and R&B/hip-hop charts. The group's follow-up album Diary of a Mad Band, however, sparked controversy between the band and their label, and although the release went platinum it still caused rough times at Uptown Entertainment.Amid Jodeci's success in the ‘90s came another bump in the road for K-Ci and DeVante, who plead guilty to a case of sexual assault. DeVante's house was also robbed for over $160,000 in material possessions around this time, but the four young men bounced back and released a number of hits to follow, including 1995's The Show, the After Party, the Hotel.
