Although John P. Kee was gifted in music from a young age, he was an unlikely candidate to become a gospel singer and a pastor. But that is just what he became. People all over have been encouraged both by his music and by his story of triumph.John Prince Kee was born in Durham, North Carolina as child number 15 out of 16. His giftedness in music was seen early and Kee was soon put in a school for the musically talented. He followed his brothers Al and Wayne to the Yuba College Conservatory School of Music in Northern California. Here he discovered a liking for jazz music and played with artists like Donald Byrd and Cameo.Although his musical career seemed to be going well, Kee’s personal life was beginning to spiral downwards. He moved back to North Carolina to Charlotte and was soon deeply involved in the drug culture there as well as violence. A turning point in Kee’s life happened when he saw one of his friends killed during a botched cocaine deal in his early 20s. He went to a PTL revival meeting and there gave his life to God and became active in the church. Music also came back to Kee as he began a Charlotte community choir.Kee released his first solo album in 1987 with Yes Lord. He also began releasing albums with the New Life Community choir and their first album, Wait on Him, came out in 1989 and had the song "It Will Be Alright" on it. Since then, he has released both solo and choir albums like There is Hope, Just Me This Time, Wash Me, Blessed By Association, Mighty in the Spirit and Color of Music. Some of the hits on those CDs include "Wash Me," "Jesus is Real," "Thank You Lord," "Turn Around" and "He’ll Welcome Me."1995 was a big year for John P. Kee both personally and professionally. He married his wife, Felice Sampson, with whom he has nine children. He also started a church, the New Life Fellowship Center, in Charlotte, North Carolina. While his church has grown considerably, Kee does not accept a salary for his work. Instead, the money is being put toward the numerous programs the church offers including food for the hungry, after-school tutoring, mentoring and Adopt-A-Family. He has also continued to produce solo and choir albums while working with the church.
