Brothers Joseph, Kevin and Nicholas Jonas were just 16, 17 and 13, respectively, when their debut album It’s About Time was released in 2006. The New Jersey trio’s sound is formed around the moving voice of young Nicholas. The youngest Jonas began as a solo artist by impressing record executives and released a couple of albums before uniting with his brothers to form the group. The Jonas Brothers attribute influence on their music to artists like My Chemical Romance, The Backstreet Boys and Weird Al Yankovic, quite a variety of music that does indicate the group’s collective youth. The group’s aspirations to appeal to a wide demographic were demonstrated on It’s About Time by the band’s tendency to switch gears from song to song. An acoustic ballad could be followed by a song with a dance-rock tone or a touch of reggae. The album appealed mostly to a younger audience and their video for “Year 3000” was featured often by the Disney Channel. The song made the Top 10 on iTunes and the band’s popularity really started to soar. The group made appearances on Radio Disney and their versions of a couple of Kim Wilde songs done for the Meet the Robinsons soundtrack only added to their rising stars status. The boys returned in 2007 with Jonas Brothers with some added maturity and less of a teenybopper sound. The album was well received and the trio was praised for their musical growth from record to record. While their debut only contained songs penned by outside songwriters, their second effort is comprised completely of tracks written by the brothers themselves. Joe, Kevin and Nick had been working on these songs for a year and were able to record the album in a mere 21 days thanks to their familiarity with the material. The Jonas Brothers are on an incredible ride at a very young age. The trio enjoys life on the road with one another and each member takes pleasure in performing with their siblings. The group’s songs touch on issues that any person is dealing with at their age, from dating, crushes, and heartbreak to the extraordinary aspects of their lives like life on the road and living out their dream. The Jonas Brothers have only begun in what could be a long and illustrious music career and it should be interesting to see the trio grow as artists and hone their craft with each record they produce.
